WHAT ARE THE CAUSES OF HAIR LOSS IN MEN?
By the age of 35, two-thirds of men in the United States will experience hair loss and, by the age of 50, 85 percent will have thinning hair, according to the American Hair Loss Association [1]. Androgenetic alopecia, also known as common male pattern baldness, or MPB, can have a significant impact on these men. But what causes MPB in the first place?
Genetics
Genetics plays a huge role in MPB, according to scientific research. Although scientists aren’t quite sure how men inherit hair loss, they believe it’s triggered by the genes men receive from their parents [2].
“Doctors don’t fully understand why certain hormonal changes cause hair follicles to shrink, or why the balding process gradually happens in the same pattern for most men,” says Web MD [2]. “But it usually starts with a thinning of the hairline above your temples and crown.”
Yes, MPB runs in families, but it’s far more complicated than this, with many genetic variants involved. Some men inherit specific genetic variants that increase their chances of developing MPB by as much as 58 percent, according to one study [3].
“A common saying is that hair loss can be traced back to a person’s grandfather on their mother’s side. While this isn’t entirely true, there is some genetic evidence behind it,” says genetics company Helix [3].
Stress
There is some research to suggest that stress can bring on MPB because it increases the production of sex hormones in the body [4]. If this is the case, you can reduce stress by exercising regularly, meditating, and partaking in relaxing activities, such as listening to music.
Immune System Problems
Immune system problems can also cause MPB. Many men who suffer from hair loss have a genetic condition called alopecia areata, where the immune system attacks the hair follicles and causes small patches of hair to fall from the head [5].
Alopecia areata often starts in childhood, and you are more likely to suffer from this condition if it runs in your family. Sometimes, the hair grows back, but it could fall out again in the future.
Medication
Hair loss is often a side effect of drugs you take for pre-existing conditions, such as heart disease, high blood pressure, arthritis, or even depression. These medications can sometimes cause the hair to thin and fall out. You might be able to reduce hair loss by stopping these medications on the advice of a doctor.
