PREVENTING WINTER HAIR WOES

Winter weather can be brutal to your hair. The dry air both indoors and out can leave you with brittle, dull and damaged locks. Luckily, you don’t have to wait until spring to get your hair back in shape. You can take a few quick steps right now to prevent and cure hair problems.

Shampoo Less

You probably have a daily routine that includes shampooing your hair. Everyone loves fresh and bouncy tresses, but most people do not need to wash their hair every day to keep it looking good. In fact, washing daily in the winter just leads to a dry flaky scalp and dull hair.

To improve this situation, try shampooing every other day or even less often. If you don’t like the way your hair looks, use dry shampoo to give it a lift on the days you do not shampoo. There are many excellent products on the market now that protect your hair while keeping it clean.

Remove the Heat

Blow drying your hair and using curling irons on it just contributes to the dryness issue. While no one expects you to completely forego styling tools, try to give your hair several days off a week. On the weekends, let your hair dry naturally. Pull it back in a simple ponytail or up in a loose bun instead of going for curls or super-straight hair.

Moisturize and Moisturize Some More

Summertime humidity means you usually don’t need to moisturize every time you shampoo. Winter weather changes all of that. Depending on the texture of your hair, you may need to use both moisturizing shampoo and conditioner. In addition, you should use a deep conditioning treatment once a week.

Wear the Right Hats

Wearing the right type of hats in winter can help protect your hair. The cold and dry air can cause your hair to break. A soft hat that is not too tight serves to protect your hair from the elements. A tight hat or one that catches your hair can cause further damage. Wearing one for long periods can also be a negative. Instead, cover your hair in a comfortable hat when you are outside and remove it when you go back in. As a plus, you will stay warmer as well.

You should never treat your winter hair the same as you do your summer locks. Concentrate on protecting your hair and scalp from becoming dry and damaged, and you’ll escape the ugliness of winter-harmed hair.
